The retro market is shaping up for a tough renewal, as buyers and sellers square up over structure, available capacity and pricing right as the crucial 1 January deadline approaches.

Significant retro recoveries in 2011 have proved the value of the product to buyers, with the protection mitigating the impact of the thumping natural catastrophe losses experienced by many reinsurers.

However, cat losses including the New Zealand and Tohoku earthquakes and the Thai floods have fallen heavily on retrocession writers...
