Insured cat losses top $36bn for 2010

Insured losses from natural catastrophes and manmade disasters total $36bn in 2010 so far - up 34 percent on last year - according to Swiss Re's Sigma team.

The figure is in line with the 20-year average, as heavy claims in the first half of the year were offset by an unusually light US hurricane season.

Swiss Re's figure included $31bn from natural catastrophes, with the remainder coming from man-made disasters - notably the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.
