Cat investors mull contingent capital offering

A number of insurers have approached capital markets investors recently to secure contingent capital facilities that would trigger if a heavy 2010 cat loss year sparked a hard traditional market, Trading Risk understands.

UK insurer Hiscox and French reinsurer Scor are among those contemplating purchasing an option on a just-in-time capital injection that would boost balance sheets in a heavy loss year, according to sources. Other interested issuers include Continental European firms, Bermudian (re)insurers and US mutual insurers.
