Cat rates rise at January but uptick rests on short-term factors

Property catastrophe reinsurance pricing has increased, but it is unclear if a prolonged market uptick will occur, broker Willis Re forecasts in its "1st View" 1 January renewals report.

Willis Re chairman Peter Hearn noted that rate increases are largely being driven by an immediate earnings challenge and "not the classic capital shortage of an historic hard market rating turn."

If 2012 underwriting results return to profitability, it is unclear if price rises will continue with pressure for sustained market...
