European weather trading flourishes in the heat

London's promising summer may have turned into a dismal August, but warm weather has still prompted a flurry of activity in European temperature futures trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) in past weeks.

Total notional traded volumes for August cumulative average temperature (CAT) futures have reached £2.6mn for UK trades and EUR1.71mn for European trades for the year to date.

Just 75 London contracts - with notional value of less than £1mn - had been traded by the start...
