Hurricane season goes ‘supernova’; forecasts lifted

Forecaster Weather Services International (WSI) has increased its predictions for major hurricanes in the 2010 season after Julia and Karl surprised forecasters by developing into major storms last week.

WSI now predicts six intense hurricanes for this season (that is, category 3 or more on the Saffir-Simpson scale), up from five major storms in its August forecast.

The season has "gone supernova" during the past few weeks after a relatively slow start, WSI said.
