More than $1.5bn of cat bonds exposed to Japanese quake

A total of nine cat bonds, with combined value of $1.56bn, are exposed to Japanese earthquakes and risk being triggered by the magnitude 8.9 temblor that struck the North-east of the country today (11 March).

According to Trading Risk data, nine outstanding cat bonds include cover for Japanese quake, including the $300mn 2008 Muteki transaction - issued by Munich Re on behalf of Japanese insurer Zenkyoren - which is scheduled to mature in May this year.
