Rate rise cracks show for mid-year renewals

Most reinsurers are still talking up the mid-year US property cat market and insisting that the 10-15 percent rate increases seen at 1 January can be replicated, but the first cracks in the façade of market confidence have become apparent.

XL Re CEO Jamie Veghte expressed scepticism about the scale of rate increases in US wind this week on a conference call.

"My own view is it will go up again, although probably about halfway [to the] levels we saw...
