Chile and Xynthia lead record $22bn catastrophe losses in H1

An "exceptionally" heavy first half for earthquakes and storms has generated a record $22bn of insured losses from natural catastrophes, according to figures compiled by Munich Re.

The reinsurance giant noted that the figure already exceeds the total for 2009 as a whole and is more than double the first-half average for the past ten years.

The tally trumped the previous record for first-half losses set in catastrophe-struck 2008.
