Retro rate momentum sags at year-end

The momentum for retro rate increases at the January renewals slowed at the end of last year, sources said, as lack of new demand and a smooth reload of lost capital meant increases fell short of expectations.

In terms of the reload, retro recoveries meant that some ILS managers also gained capital late in the year from hedges paying out - with Bermudian manager Aeolus benefiting from recoveries from peers, sources said.
