Side pocketing aids fundraising post-HIM

Abuse of side pockets in the financial crisis - when hedge funds locked in investors to avoid having to sell off discounted assets - has made the practice less palatable in the wider financial markets.

But in the ILS space, side pocketing is still commonly used to manage the uncertainties linked to catastrophe events, and the practice has surged since last year's hurricanes lumbered funds with hard-to-value assets.
