Weather market hopes for sunnier future

As if hedging against Mother Nature wasn't a tricky enough business, weather derivatives dealers have been hard hit by the global market turbulence over the past two years.

Figures from the Weather Risk Management Association (WRMA) show the toll wreaked by the credit crisis on the nascent market, which halved in size from $32bn in 2007-2008 to $15bn in 2008-2009. (See graph, click to enlarge.)

But this hasn't held back innovation, with industry players ever hopeful that they can translate...
