Swiss Re said it will stop underwriting thermal coal projects by 2040, as it announced targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 across underwriting, investments and its own operations.

On the underwriting side the reinsurer has plans to introduce new thermal coal exposure thresholds for treaty reinsurance for its property, engineering, casualty, credit & surety and marine cargo lines of business in 2023.
