HCI Group reported a $6.1mn net profit for the first quarter well ahead of the $0.5mn delivered a year ago, as it benefited from earned premium growth and improved investment results, which offset a higher loss ratio.

Premiums: The insurer lifted its top line by almost two-thirds to $125.8mn, led by growth at InsurTech subsidiary TypTap, which received a $100mn cash investment from Centerbridge Partners during the quarter.
