The Caldor Fire in north eastern California, near South Lake Tahoe, has destroyed 600 homes and 180 other structures, with 44 structures damaged, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) on Wednesday evening.

Two civilians and three firefighters had been injured.

A further 32,000 buildings were threatened as the fire continued to spread, helped by low humidity and wind gusts of up to 45 miles an hour.
