China opens door to SPIs issuing cat bonds in Hong Kong

Chinese insurers have received the green light from their regulator to issue catastrophe bonds in Hong Kong for earthquakes, typhoons, floods and public health crises.

The China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) has outlined its rules for special purpose insurers (SPIs) to issue cat bonds in Hong Kong, following new legislation introduced by the island in July 2020.
