23 December marked the 25th anniversary of the closing of the first widely distributed cat bond, St Paul Re’s George Town Re.

Other ILS experiments in the early 1990s included Hannover Re completing its first K sidecar in 1994, and the year after George Town, in 1997, USAA brought its first Residential Re cat bond to market.
