Reduced amounts of ILS capital at the 1 January renewal led to short supply of collateralised occurrence and sidecar capacity, creating a knock-on effect in reinsurance where carriers were forced to slash cat capacity for their own cedants, according to Gallagher Re.

In its First View report on the 1 January renewal, the intermediary noted that reinsurers’ hardened attitude did not apply to every class of business, with proportional non-cat business “keenly sought” this year.
