Turkey and Syria suffer 7.8 magnitude quake and at least 20 aftershocks

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria at 04:00 local time today, killing at least 641 people and wounding thousands, and destroying at least 1,500 buildings, according to media reports.

The epicentre of the quake was in the Pazarcik district of Turkey’s Kahramanmaras province, the BBC reported.

The 10 Turkish cities affected were Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniya, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis.
